To keep the tread of your tyres in constant contact with the road, the wheel and tyre must be correctly balanced. On the road, wheel imbalance can actually lift the tyre from contact with the road which you will experience as vibration through the steering wheel. This can obviously cause steering and braking problems.

The vibration causes high-pressure stress in the steering, hub assemblies and suspension, resulting in excessive mechanical wear and higher fuel consumption as well as tyre wear. If the imbalance is not corrected there can be damage caused to the suspension, wheel bearings and steering components. Wheel balancing should also be done whenever you replace a tyre or have a puncture repaired.
